Calling all superheroes!

Posted: November 5th, 2011

Hello folks and welcome to American Bulldog Rescue! We are a group of volunteers who are commited to helping the bullies. We have many success stories to speak of and unfortunately many sad stories as well. This week in Florida a female dog and her seven puppies were found in a field fighting to survive. We desperately need someone very special to take them into a home where the puppies can grow and their mother can relax and recuperate from the afflictions of being a stray. We feel  ideally they should remain in the Florida area because of the warmer climate that the mother dog is accustomed to. We urge everyone to spread the word about this this very delicate situation. Everyday we are challenged with a tremendous amount of dog abuse cases that never cease to both shock us and create a sick feeling within us that weakens us yet gives us strength to continue the fight against the evil in our society. Our minds cannot erase the horrors, but we hang in there in hopes that there will be angels or might I say super heroes that come to the rescue in times of great need. This is a constant battle between good vs. evil and unfortunately like in the movies there will be a sequel. We are always looking for wonderful people to be the good guys! We cannot let the bad guys win. This is not a difficult role, it just takes a good heart, a love of dogs, and the conviction to make a change for the greater good. Till we meet again, Trish

Not everyone is meant to make a difference. But for me, the choice to lead an ordinary life is no longer an option. Peter Parker aka Spiderman

Hannah Lewis contacted me about a month ago. She wanted to make American Bulldog Rescue her Bat Mitzvah project. I met her and her parents today to pick up her collections. I was
AMAZED! Hannah collected 8 brand new extra large dog beds, 4 cases of canned Cannidae dog food, 4 boxes of frontline, a zillion new leashes and collars and $300! and she said that there is more to come! I asked her mother how she did it and she said that that Hannah is stubborn and determined and does not take no for an answer!!!
Hopefully some day soon Hannah will take over and run American Bulldog
Rescue! Go Hannah!

We Need Foster Homes:

Florida: This is the email we recieved: My name is Ileana and I am trying to help an American Bulldog that was dumped in the field close to where I live. She had puppies within the last week. I don’t know how many nor their condition since she was in really bad shape when I first saw her and she was pregnant. She is living in a field across from the Publix located at 152nd St and 157th Ave. I feed her twice a day and this morning she sounded really congested. She needs help getting her out of that field with her puppies. She and her 7 babies have been caught and are on their way to a bath to get rid of the fleas. Please consider donating below:

Maryland: Cornflower Blue is sweet and friendly and good with other dogs. She is searching for a foster family to entertain! She promises smiles and laughter!

Maryland: I knew about this purebred American Bulldog from staff, and they said the usual “she’s sweet”. Well, you can take that info for a grain of salt- they’re almost ALL sweet.. but I went down to pick up a dog Friday and met this girl in person and she is a full-out HEARTBREAKER.
Serena clearly bred for puppies, has some hot spots or flea allergy issues, a funky tail, but what is horrifying is it looks like someone filed her front teeth and canines down. Why? I have no idea, this girl is as personable as they get. She was trying to climb up in the kennel attendant’s lap while he was on the phone. A big couch potato. Loves to give amazing kisses. Tested a-ok with males and females on leash.
She was supposedly brought to a friend’s house for them to keep for awhile, and that person in turned dumped her at the pound. Could have been that person’s dog or a true story, but this approx 5 year old girl needs help regardless. Please consider fostering this sweet girl!

Florida: Meet Chunk the Hunk, a 1 year old neutered male American Bulldog. We believe he was a stray and found by someone who could not keep him but wanted to find him a good home. He is very friendly towards all people he has met so far. He plays well with most dogs. He enjoys his walks with our two girls and is learning to walk on a loose leash. He still sees cats as a live furry play toy, so at the moment he would not do well with cats, but we are working on what is appropriate dog-cat behavior, so this may change. He is doing very well with house training and learning that a kennel is a good thing and is his space. He loves to play with soft squeaky toys; throwing them in the air, pushing them with his nose to get them to squeak, and doing a happy squeal himself in the process. He does not food or toy guard with us, humans, but he is a bit protective of his toys with other dogs so far. He is a very sweet guy and loves a good scritch. He seems to be a “leaner” and likes to come up and just lean against you or come up from behind and stand between your legs, kind of just to say “hey, I’m here…” Please help Chunk the Hunk from Miami find his furever home soon.
Pennsylvania: Tahnee‘s life did not get off to the best start.
Living in a fenced in cow pasture with her mom and brother for the first 6 months of her life is not how we picture the idyllic life of a cute little puppy. She missed all the fun things to do and see that most puppies get to experience. When you meet most dogs, you are greeted with a wiggly tail and probably some big sloppy kisses. When you meet this beautiful girl, you’ll be looking at her from across the room. She is slow to trust new people, but let me tell you. Once she does, she is the most amazing dog you’ll ever meet. She is warm and snuggly, playful, and full of life. She will go for walks with her tail held high and do play bows with you with abandon. If you have the time and love to give, please consider making your home Tahnee’s forever home.

When you look into his eyes you’ll lose your heart because he’s so pitiful. He will just lean into you for love and attention.  Please consider making Wally a forever loved member of your family!  Please contact hhicarey@yahoo.com and fill out an adoption application so we can see if Wally will be a good fit for you/your family.

Florida: Sweet Wally is a neutered male that was brought to the local shelter after he had been hanging around a truck yard for over a month.  This handsome boy did not even want to get his picture taken and he kept turning his head almost ashamed.  He is under weight and has hair loss and red itchy skin.  Possibly a severe flea allergy.  He was going to be euthanized due to his allergies.  We couldn’t let that happen.  He will be well cared for now and is now on his way to a boarding facility until a foster home opens up.  If you look past his skin allergies, you’ll see the sweetest and gentlest giant.  He walks nicely on a leash and wags his tail when he sees other dogs.  He was introduced to a cat and skidaddled out of the room when the cat hissed at him.

Pennsylvania: SPECIAL NEEDS: Poor Tulip was confiscated from a hoarding situation. She is not in the best shape. She was living in a filthy home with 8 other dogs and a lot of reptiles. Tulip has some eye issues and was seen by a regular vet, has been getting drops which have not been enough. She will be heading to the Opthomologist as soon as we can get her an appointment. She could really use a foster home. She is in boarding where is getting her drops but she needs alot of loving. She is like a little stuffed animal, very snuggly and rather calm. She is located in Bucks County, PA.
Maryland: McIntosh is a big goofy young boy who is headed to our boarding kennel in MD. He would really rather be heading into a foster home, so let’s try to make his dreams of having a familt come true!
Pennsylvania: Lolly is a gorgeous 3-5 year old female American Bulldog. Poor Lolly was surrendered by her owners because they were moving and could not take her along. Lolly has lived with kids of all ages before and is friendly with people. She is strong on leash but knows “sit” and “paw”. She seems to like other dogs.
North Carolina: Nemo is around 2 yrs old, very friendly with people, good with other dogs, house-trained, crate-trained, knows how to sit, shake, and does good off leash. He will come when called. He is very very sweet and affectionate! Adorable!

Pennsylvania: Bosco came from a NC shelter. He is completely emaciated. He is fantastic with other dogs and cats. A few weeks ago some of you saw the post about Bosco, the dog that had a full size bath towel removed from his stomach. There were complications and he was touch and go for several days. Well I am happy to report that Bosco is getting better day by day and continuing to put on weight! What you might not know is the background story on Bosco. Bosco was turned into a shelter and adopted out to people that only had him for two weeks. During that time he was chained outside where he ingested an inner tube, which he was able to pass on his own and a bath towel. Which leads us to believe that he was without food or water and was terrorized during this ordeal. After two weeks he was returned by these people to the shelter because they claimed he was too much work and needed too much attention. It was stated by the shelter that he left a normal dog and was returned anxious and sick.Luckily he was taken to the vet where they discovered that he had the towel in his stomach. The vet said that if not given the medical attention that he needed he only had about two days to live. Bosco is currently being fostered by us and it has been amazing to see the resilence he is showing day by day! He is eating normally and beginning to understand how to walk on a leash and be a dog once again. He has also shown no interest in eating anything but food since we have had him as well.
Florida: Meet Chunk the Hunk, a 1 year old neutered male American Bulldog. We believe he was a stray and found by someone who could not keep him but wanted to find him a good home. He is very friendly towards all people he has met so far. He plays well with most dogs. He seems to be a “leaner” and likes to come up and just lean against you or come up from behind and stand between your legs, kind of just to say “hey, I’m here…”
Pennsylvania: Oh Mercy is Mercy looking fine! She is impressing her foster family with how smart she is and how accepting one can be after having such a traumatic beginning.
Pennsylvania: This is Mugsy! He was surrendered by his owner because they kid in the home is allergic to him. He’s about 2-3 years old, is neutered and seems like a big lug. He has lived with a slew of children and is pretty well socialized with other dogs. He’s great with handling, walks well on a leash and according to his former owners, he’s house broken.
Florida: Jefferson is PERFECT with dogs, cats, PERFECT in the house and all this after coming from a living HELL. He was saved at the last second from euthanasia in a Louisiana shelter. Emaciated and battling against all of the emotional damage this level of longstanding abuse can cause. Some, like Jefferson, instead completely shut down as their way to cope. We know for certain that Jefferson’s case was one of the very worst. As his wounds slowly healed, we (Jefferson and a huge crew of dedicated staff) worked very hard with an incredible trainer to help Jefferson reintegrate or maybe even just integrate for the first time, into what would be his new life. He would stand emotionless as you pet, touched, talked to him. I’m very happy to say that this is no longer the case…at ALL!!! He likes to be in the company of other dogs, walks spectacularly on lead, has been a wonderful house guest at his fabulous foster home- he has made us so very proud! . If you think you are worthy of this incredible, beautiful, majestic, kind, gentle, smooshy, drooly love muffin please send in an application. Jeff has fought so very hard, now he just needs his “happy tail”! Jefferson and the kids playing video

LQQK there are no more bones! Roxy is
gaining lots of weight!
Florida: Roxy Meet Roxy! She was living with a homeless gentleman after an area tire shop closed the doors and no longer wanted her. Roxy is adjusting well in her new foster home. At just 1 ½ years old, Roxy was Heartworm Positive and about 20 lbs underweight, but is getting stronger each day. Though she’s had a rough patch, you would never know from her gentle and loving personality. She loves to play fetch, knows simple commands, and is friendly with other dogs. Roxy has had a long recovery from pneumonia and starvation but was finally healthy enough (after weeks of antibiotics and homeopathic remedy) to start her heartworm treatment! Roxy is looking better each day. She now has a healthy appetite and is gaining weight. From her foster mom: I’m being more careful with leaving food on the table or the counter. If an unsupervised opportunity should present itself (meaning your sausage sandwich), she is happy to take it. She will also wash it down with a fresh cool drink from the toilet, so now all lids must be closed (lol).

Percilla is overcoming her fears with the help of
Blitz Pet Pros and is making great progress. She needs to go into a home with a male K9 companion.

Pennsylvania: PERCELLA SILLA is ready or her new home. She is fantastic, not perfect but sweet, and as good as they come. She would be great with a older (3 – up), calm male dog and older children. Make an appointment to meet this sweetheart. UPDATE: PERSILLA (aka SILLA) IS BEING PROFESSIONALLY TRAINED BY: BLITZ PET PROFESSIONALS, www.blitzpetpros.com located in BUCKS COUNTY PA. SILLA is doing great as you can see by her pictures, she going through intense training in Neutralization, Socialization, & Desensitization training and she will continue to Basic & Advance Obedience, thus creating a stable dog,( not perfect) but she will be rehabilitated to her best instincts. SHE MUST BE ADOPTED TO A HOME WITH ANOTHER NEUTERED MALE CALM DOG SINCE SHE JUST LOVES THE COMPANIONSHIP OF A FRIEND.
Florida: Remember the 4 beauties that came in together as “strays” but were amazingly bonded….hmmm. Well Rainbow and Sheriff went to Texas and Duke and Rambo remained in Florida. Duke and Rambo were finally sprung from boarding and have a wonderful foster mamma that couldn’t believe the ease of introducing 2 more dogs to their 2 other dogs. They are that good and well behaved. Bo came to us from a high kill shelter, as part of a group of 4. He’s a stunning bulldog who has wonderful AB physical traits (extremely muscular- large build) as well as a lot of the typical personality traits…he is VERY proud and quite stubborn when he wants to be. He is very loving and sweet though and likes to be the center of attention. Bo seems to be happiest as an only dog. I am hanging out in Tamarac, FL

New Arrivals:

Southern States: Lucy and her babies had been in a shelter for about 4 weeks now and they think she is such a great dog that they have been “hiding” her from the people who are management. They were keeping her and her puppies in the back so they will not be found easy. This County is currently in the process of dismanteling their gas chamber and in the process of training someone to euthanize. They were moved to another county shelter to be euthanized and we rescued them. Unfortunately, 4 of Lucy’s babies have already died. The other 6 are at the vet’s office as I type. Lucy needs a foster home so we can get her medically treated for heart worms (and all her other worms) and malnutrition.
Texas: Have you ever wanted to walk through the city with your best buddy, taking in the sights and smells of a nice fall day? Well MeatBall Louie would love to have a buddy to walk with this fall. In the city or in the county. MeatBall Louie is one of those surprise dogs. His happiness is shining through no matter what you do with him. He is happy all the time and a fun guy to have around. MBL is one handsome guy needing that one special home to call his own. He gets along well with other dogs and doesn’t mind a game of chase the ball, however bringing the ball back is another story. He is a avid duck hunter (decoy ducks that is). He creeps up on the decoys in our swimming pool and is very sneaky and a bit fearful of those ducks… but he creeps up on his tummy as not to startle the ducks. MBL is house trained, crate trained, and does well with dogs… He needs to work on not jumping, which is coming along but he is a strong boy so he’d do better in a home with older children. He’s totally is GREAT! You miss MBL you will miss a lifetime of fun.
Texas: Tiggy is a 2 year old spayed Victorian bull dog who was left at a high kill shelter. She had a note with her saying they could not afford to keep her any longer. That she is a great dog that gets along with other dogs and house trained. She loves water and will even hop into the shower with you in the mornings if you don’t watch her. She is house trained, crate trained and does well with the two other American Bulls one male and one female she lives with in her foster home. She really needs a lot more attention and would be so thrilled to have a home of her own. She does get fed separate because she seems to be protective of her food at this time. This little girl is solid as a rock and beautiful. She wants to be close to you and needs someone who would not mind her being a little needy in this area. She just wants to be close. She will jump up on you, but we are working on that as well. Someone will get a great dog here if they want a love bug. If you’re interested in adopting Tiggy, please contact tenacity44@hot.rr.com.
Florida: Miss Molly was is approximately10 months to 1 year old and is spayed and vaccinated. She and my dogs got along like peanut butter and jelly!! We went for a walk yesterday and she was fantastic on leash and even great when the squirrels raced in front of her. She is not high energy and the 20 minute walk we had required us to slow down for her. She is crate and house trained. She just loves everyone who walks in the door and here it is constant company. Miss Molly loves to play and is great at sharing toys. God, she is damn near perfect!!!! Oh, and Ms. Molly is almost saying her name in her bulldog whine…….its just too cute that she like to talk. If you’d like to make Molly a member of your family, please submit an adoption application. You can contact Carey at hhicarey@yahoo.com if you have any questions.
Florida: Here are Lucy’s ( See Lucy above) surviving babies. Due to Lucy’s malnutrition, the babies had to be taken away and supplemented. Poor Lucy did all she could to keep them warm and fed but unfortunately four of her children didn’t survive. They are all doing fine since visiting the vet yesterday.
Texas: Tess is a very sweet girl who was out of time at a high kill shelter. She came in very thin with pressure. Since coming to rescue she has huge smile and her body is healing beautifully. Her little body is filling out and no one looks forward to her meals more than Tess. This could be the first time in her life she gets fed twice a day and treats. She has learned to crate and does wonderful with that now too. She doesn’t jump on anyone and is very happy and content to lay by you. Tess is one of those laid back dogs that is just happy to be fed, loved and a soft place to lay down. Her personality is very sweet and loving. She appreciates anything and everything in life. Please consider making Tess a loved member of your family. She will gladly return the love tenfold. Please fill out an adoption application at www.americanbulldogrescue.org. If you have any questions, please contact Carey at hhicarey@yahoo.com.

Please donate to help Nitro here:

http://americanbulldogrescue.chipin.com/nitros-multiple-medical-issues

Orlando, FL: Nitro was surrendered to Miami/Dade Animal Services in Miami Florida. Dogs like Nitro who are owner surrendered can be euthanized immediately, there is no “stray” hold and the kill rate for big bully type breeds at this shelter is 60%.  Sadly, there are more dogs than caring homes, so dogs are euthanized to make space.  Well when American Bulldog Rescue saw Nitro’s beautiful picture – we knew we had to save him, and quickly.   Nitro was so close to getting euthanized when the wonderful rescue railroad jumped in (almost literally) and saved him. He smelled like low tide, so stinky, so 2 baths for Nitro, and it took 2 of us to clip his nails, they were so long, we never saw a dog with nails that long, he was walking on them. We took Nitro to the vet on Saturday. Nitro has a few issues. He needs his eyelids re-done. He apparently had entropion surgery but it failed. His eyelashes are rubbing against his eyes, scratching his corneas, very painful – both eyes upper and lower need to be done- again… But he will get his eyes re-done by a skilled surgeon who knows what he’s doing, and at that time Nitro is going to get that “clam” looking growth taken off his beautiful face and get a much needed dental done. Oh! that breath, pfew!!- his teeth are just awful, they are in bad shape, but the cleaning will definitely help. We are hopeful that we can get donations to help pay for his surgery, Nitro is so worthy of being taken care of for a change. Soon he will be able to see without his lashes infecting his eyes. Please donate if you can, every bit counts, anything you can give is so much appreciated. Thank you for helping us help our beautiful dogue Nitro. Nitro is being fostered in
Pennsylvania: Cheetos came from a shelter in Mississippi. She was found with a male boxer who was adopted. She was reported to be extremely depressed after being left without him. It took a lot of time and $$$$ to get her to safety. We had to board her for a month while begging and searching for transport when we had 2 Heros volunteer to fly her to PA. Thank you John and Jack! Cheetos is a really sweet girl who is Heartworm positive and has a pretty bad infection on the top of her head. She is being treated for both.

Pennsylvania: Here is a picture of the bully we have at the shelter. Possibly an English Bulldog/American Bulldog mix?? He is about 9-10 months old and he weighs 50lbs, he has a docked tail. He tested positive for Demodex and he also has entropian. His skin is horrible and he will need eye surgery but he is VERY SWEET. He also gets along well with every dog we have tested him with. He is a wiggle bug! Please let me know ASAP if you can take him. Well, he is coming. Going to the vet to have his skin cared for and his eyes fixed. He will need a forever or foster home as soon as possible. Please consider helping Thurber Lookin’ better

Pennsylvania: Mike is a smart and playful kid with a big attitude, he is a fast learner and wants to please. He is doing great with his crate training and after an active day and snuggle time Mike is more than willing to crash in his crate. Mike is such a great boy!
North Carolina: Bubba is stunning!! Huge head, gorgeous bully stance….I’m in love. He is a doll baby too….loves all dogs & doesn’t react when other dogs growl at him right in his face. He was great with my 2 year old….he gave her plenty of space even though he wanted to play with her.
Pennsylvania: Bandit is a silly, goofy, wiggly 10 -11 month puppy who appears to be house-trained and is crate trained. He was great on our walk, sleeps in his crate, has a high pretty quiet yip, but a big bark when Daisy starts barking at something. He wants to play, but so far hasn’t convinced any of our dogs who are deterred by how big and clumsy he is.

Florida: Here is the big goofball. He is a lover boy and all he wants is attention. That’s not surprising for this very loving breed. They love their people! He is sleeping in a crate at night and did really well so I think he has been crated before. He needs to gain about 10lbs. He has been neutered and vaccinated and gets along with all his foster dog family at the farm. Tater did test a low heart worm positive and is undergoing the slow kill (safer) treatment and should test negative in a few months.Tater is located in Sebring, FL. Please fill out an adoption application if you’re interested in making Tater a permanent member of your family. You can contact me at hhicarey@yahoo.com if you have any questions.

Happy Tails:

Yay Ethel Merman!!!

Ethel Merman was turned into a shelter. Her family claimed that they no longer had time for her. I don’t think they ever had time for her. she flinches almost every time you touch her. Why would anyone hit a dog? Because she was hit or beaten, Ethel would do best starting out her new life in an adult only home.
It’s official Florida !
Nakyta adoption is finalized and her family LOVES her!
Maryland: Mima ia a laid back beautiful princess. She is just a lovely soul who needs a forever or foster home. She does know some tricks and seems to be house trained. We are so so full and Mima is just sitting in a boarding kennel waiting for her turn to get into a family environment and get to show a lucky family what it is like to be loved by a Bulldog! Mima is in the DE/MD area.
Maryland: This beautiful girl lost her family when they relocated and could not take a large dog. Daisy is only a year old. She’s 70 lbs. and has the sweetest disposition. Daisy Garden is quiet, healthy, loves playing with other dogs and warmly greats everyone she meets. She is spayed, vaccinated and on a heartworm preventative.
Pennsylvania: Poor Lexi was surrendered to a shelter with Zodiac. Their “owner brought them both to a shelter on a very hot day. He brought Zodiac into the shelter and left Lexi in the car, they literally had to bring Lexi back to life. Lexi is shy at first but comes to life when she has a confident male dog to show her that everything will be OK.
Pennsylvania: Casper is an 18 month old outgoing angel who loves other dogs, he is house trained, great on a leash and eager to please. He has the biggest smile you have ever seen and makes everyone around him feel like they are really special!
