Go ahead and pour yourself a big cup of coffee (or your favorite beverage depending on the time of day) and take a look at our many beautiful babies. Be sure to check out our other adoptables as well. As always, we are in desperate need of donations and foster homes.

We hope everyone is having a great weekend!

Still waiting:

Kettle & Oleg

It’s me, Kettle! I’m still waiting for my furever home. I had been living in a Kennel for months (!) and Jodi came and got me. Here’s what she wrote about me-

Have you ever met a dog that you would swear was a person trapped in a canine body? A dog who you know understands every word you say? Kettle is this someone. She is a remarkable girl, she is in the mood to do whatever you like and communicates with you. She sits in the front seat of the car and thinks she is driving with you. She makes all kinds of faces and actually tries to make you laugh. Kettle is one cool girl and she’s hanging out in PA waiting for her forever home.

Kettle’s photo album

Update from Jodi- Kettle is so amazing, she is sooooooo housebroken, will not go on the furniture, she doesn’t bark and catches a ball every time you throw it.

Cindy Lou Who here!

Cindy Lou Who will be a Cinderella story. The sweetest most gentle girl who has probably been neglected her entire life is about to become a princess. Cindy Lou was about 30 pounds underweight at 94 and is now all the way up to 105 pounds and lookin’ great, she had her eye surgery and was spayed and her skin is improving by the day. Cindy likes other dogs and is located in PA. Her surgeries so far have been over $1,500 and we are not done yet.Cindy is making so much progress. She is loving her life, her foster mom and her foster brothers. Lookin fine Cindy!!!

Lady J was picked up as a stray in Miami, FL. She was being brought into ‘the room’ with the staff just crying.  Luckily Laura was there and Lady J just came up and gave her a big kiss…..what else could we do?  Even though we’re so full and her only place to go was boarding at a vet’s office, we had to save her.  Her pictures do not do her justice.  She is absolutely stunning with her hazel eyes and unique markings.  Unfortunately, it’s very hard to get good pictures as when she’s with people, all she wants is to be WITH you or on your lap cuddling. We’re shifting some dogs around to get Jaybird into a wonderful foster home next weekend.  She’ll get all the love and attention she desires with Chris and Hillary.
PS….she needs a new name too…lol…..no one likes the name that the shelter gave her but we’re waiting for her new family to choose a fitting name for this beauty. Lady J is in FL.

Although Augie has a wonderful foster family, he still waits for a loving family to call his own.  He was supposed to have a family meet him but lost out to another dog that also needs a great home.  Poor Augie keeps getting overlooked!  Please consider adopting Augie.  He is such a good boy and has come sooooo far from the starving and neglected puppy he used to be. Here’s what his foster mom wrote about him-

Auggie is a rockstar. He is honestly the best dog we have ever fostered. We hardly ever put him in his crate anymore, he sleeps on his blanket wherever you put it.

Augustus is currently in FL. Check out his photo album.

{flv}darla|200|200{/flv}

Sweet and smiling Darla wasn’t always this happy.  She was confiscated from her owner and sat at Animal Control in a windowless cell for almost 2 months.  ABR rescued her and brought her to Doggie Disneyland with her tail between her legs.  It just broke everyone’s heart.  The wonderful woman that transported her said when she said ‘no’ to correct her from pulling on her leash, she hit the ground and looked up cringing waiting to be beat.  She is testimony as to the forgiving nature of dogs and she’s having a blast at Sun Kiva Boarding.  They just love this happy girl and witnessing her blossom.  She LOVES other dogs and people and can’t wait to hang out with them in the office and play with the other dogs in the yard.  But sweet Darla has been there for almost 2 months.  She really would love her very own forever family to live happily ever after. Darla is in FL.

Lydia is ready for her forever home.  ABR will have her spayed and an ‘eye lift’ done next week so she’s just as stunning as her personality.  She’s been in a foster home where she’s proven to be the angel we knew she was.  She has full run of the house with a little maltese and doesn’t chew anything or have accidents.  She’s absolutely perfect. Lydia is currently in FL.

Hey, it’s me Lydia- they just added a bunch of new photos for me. Check them out!

Goliath is a good boy who just had bad luck. He came from GA and if he had a family, they just didn’t take care of him. Skinny and Heartworm positive, he is now getting the care he needs. Goliath is good with other dogs and great in the car. He is loved by everyone who meets him because his southern charm shines. He could really use a family who will appreciate his charming personality.  He is in the beginning stages of his heartworm treatment and could use a foster family to help him through it. He is currently in PA.

Goliath’s photo album

Update from Jodi- Goliath is having his heartworm treatment on Monday. Everyone at the vet’s office is in love with him.

Hello friends! It’s me Sumo. You’re probably thinking I was named after a sumo wrestler, but I’m really just an exceptionally good natured, low key and easy going guy. I really like going for walks and riding in the car, but I LOVE people and getting loved on! I make new friends wherever I go. I also like experiencing new things. See, I spent the first part of my life tied to my doghouse in the mountains of Virginia. Now I’m loving freedom and ready to go home with you so you can keep fueling my curiosity for learning and seeing new things! I’m crate trained and I rarely bark, but I would prefer a house where I can be the only dog so I can hog all of the attention (hey, I’ve got a lot of making up to do!)

Sumo has been in a foster home for what seems like forever. Won’t you please consider opening your heart and home to this beautiful boy? He is currently in MD. Sumo’s Photo Album

Piper is a cute, playful and adorable puppy with a very sad past. To the best of our knowledge, she was left in a very small kennel her entire puppyhood, which caused her muscles to not develop properly. When we got her she could barely walk. Since she has been in our care she is doing much better. Her muscles are developing nicely. Now, she can even RUN, although she still limps if she overdoes it. The doctors have reviewed her x-rays and are optimistic that with good therapy (short walks and swimming lessons) she will continue to develop good muscle tone and be a happy, healthy puppy! She will need to be on joint supplements to help her hips. Piper is learning well in her foster home, she knows sit and will come when called. She is kennel trained but does need to go out frequently as she is still a puppy. She would be good with older dogs only, and may need to be the only dog in the house; she should not be with small dogs or puppies. She is a great little puppy, loves to play and also knows when to lay down and cuddle with her new owner!

It’s Gertie here! I’m still looking for my forever home. They first wrote about me on 08/29/10. I just wanted to give you a update on how I have been doing.  My loving Foster family has been doing great with me.    Mommy took me to a nice person who at first I was very afraid of. They said I needed to get “fixed” hummm…did not know what that meant but O.K. if my Momma said so.  I was very scared when they put me in the cage and when they tried to put that UFO thing on my head…OMG!

I am learning that when my family leaves they will COME BACK. I try and go as much as I can with them. Lucky for me my Mommy takes me when she drops off my human brother to school.  I luv that!  I just jump right into the back seat and sit.  I also am learning to do that thing they call “playing”.  WOW is that fun!  And guess what? I can RUN!  Yeppers, I love to run and play!    My little doggie brother still loves to pester me and get on my nerves and bite me. I have been so good with that.  If I do anything, its only to tell him to stop.   I eat really well now too and I have to say, I am looking GOOD!  I stretch out so Mommy can tell me how pretty I am.  WUV it! WOOF!  I am hoping I get my furever family real soon. I am such a great girl who just needed that love and understanding. Please think of me when looking. Thanks Gertie

ps- I’m in NC/VA.

Hi, my name is Marlon! Here’s my writeup-

Marlon turned up as a stray in NYC and has been horribly neglected. He is unbelievably under 2 years old and looks like an old man. Marlon has a very treatable skin condition called Demodectic Mange which if treated when he was younger would have dissipated. Now after years of neglect he will have a long road ahead of him. Antibiotics, a bath ever other day with medicated shampoo, multiple supplements, and acupuncture will have Marlon’s outside matching his beautiful inside. He is currently in PA.

Marlon’s photo album

Update from Jodi- Marlon is doing really well and has some hair growth.

Hello, my name is Einstein. My current dad has to move to a new place and I won’t be able to go with him so I’m in need of a new furever home. He wrote lots of stuff about me so my new family will know just how special I am. It’s too much to put here so I have my own web page where you can read all about me. I’m currently in FL.

09/26/10, 3:38 p.m.- I’ve been adopted!!!!!!

Updates:

Hi everyone, it unanimous….everyone swears the baby’s daddy is a Chihuahua….we are now the proud owners of a ‘Chully’.  Chully Pepper is just the cutest, funniest and smartest baby.  Mom, yet to be named (trying not to name her Habanero or Red Hot) is just sweetest and best behaved girl.  She appears to be about 2 years old and must have lived in a house before because she feels right at home on the couch or in a bed.  She is just lovely.  Please consider making one of these beautiful girls a member of your family. They are currently in FL.

Update: Mom has been named Twinkles….. as in ‘little star’.

Update from Carey on Magoo:

We’re begging for a knowledgeable person to foster and train him with hand signals so he can go on to his forever home. Magoo is a wonderful puppy and is absolutely loving life now that he can see it.  He’s a big goofball.  He will bring a toy to his foster mom in the morning and drop it on her bed to let her know it’s time to get up so he can go pottie.  He also brought Julie his empty food bowl to tell her it was time for breakfast. Magoo is just a wonderful boy that is truly showing how appreciative he is of his new life.  He shows signs that things were thrown at him and he ducks his head or will leave the room if something is held over his head, even a camera.  I’m so happy that Magoo never has to worry about ever being mistreated again Please contact HHICarey@yahoo.com if you’re interested in fostering Magoo and helping him with his continuing education.  He’s a really fast learner and knows that he has to keep you in sight so he’s never far from you.  Magoo is in FL.

New Arrivals:

Hello. I don’t have a name yet so for now they’re calling me Merle since the shelter described me as a blind merle bulldog mix. I’m busting out of the Dekalb County (GA) shelter and heading to Jodi’s and will be in PA on Sunday. Not being able to see and all, it’s been really scary but everyone keeps telling me it’s going to be okay. The shelter wrote that I’m a really sweet boy. Jodi said she wants to name me after she meets me. She’ll write all about me once I get there.

Merle’s photo album

PS- I forgot to mention, I’m heartworm positive too 🙁

09/26/10, 3:34- Hey, it’s me Merle. I just arrived at Jodi’s. She told me that she likes the name so Merle it is. Here’s what she just wrote about me-

He is so sad and smelly. I feel so sorry for him…but he is already following my voice. He is too traumatized to bathe today. Will attempt that tomorrow. Seems house trained.

Hello, my name is Titan! I was rescued from the shelter in Americus, GA and am currently in PA. They will be posting my writeup soon.

Hello, my name is Bullet! I was rescued from the shelter in Americus, GA and am currently in PA. They should have my writeup soon. Aren’t I a handsome boy?????

Bullet’s photo album

My name is Charlotte! Am I not one of the cutest things you’ve ever seen? They rescued me from a shelter in NC and I’m currently in a foster home in MD. Here’s my writeup:

Little Charlotte is four months old. She is full of energy and puppy kisses. Charlotte loves other dogs and has a very outgoing personality. She is a smart little lady who learns quickly and is eager to please.

Charlotte’s photo album

Hello, my name is Layla! I’m currently in MD. Here is a little more about me:

Layla is 2.5 years old, very well behaved, housebroken, knows sit, stay, come and lie down. She was taken to an animal shelter in Delaware when her family could no longer care for her. A volunteer at the shelter was so charmed by Layla that she drove several hundred miles to get her to our rescue. Layla did well on her temperament tests. She would prefer to be the only dog in the family and ignored the cats at the vet hospital.

Hello. Our names are Jake & Delilah. We are currently in MD and came to ABR from a cruelty case (starvation) in VA. We have been sitting in a shelter for well over a year waiting for the case to be settled. Finally, we will have a chance at a normal life.

We will write more about Jake & Delilah soon.

We’re struggling with this situation…. not in taking the dogs (whatsoever!!!!), but showing the original pictures. We firmly believe it’s important for people to see. However, the photos are gut wrenching and quite disturbing. What do you think? Let us know on Facebook.

Hey there, my name is Utley! Well, my name will probably change but I don’t much care what they call me. I’m free!!!! I made my way all the way from Dekalb County, GA to MD this weekend. Just arrived 🙂 I’m just a baby but I already know how to sit and take treats gently. I’m really sweet and eager to get love. They’ll write more about me after I’ve had a chance to settle in.

Utley’s photo album

Well howdy pardners….. my name is CowBaby! Me and my bud Utley JUST arrived in MD all the way from GA. Here’s what my transporter wrote about me-

CowBaby is a a teeny little Boxer – pit bull mix, who is so sweet and eager to have you look at him. He knows how to sit . Only about 40 pounds…so cute!! He lived in a kennel w/multiple other dogs…so did Utley

They’ll write more about me later. Check out my photo album.

And then there’s this……..

From our ABR volunteers in Texas-

I am sending this to everyone in my address book in the hopes that people will pass this on and share with anyone and everyone they know that loves dogs, and hopefully you will have it in your heart to donate as well.  Even just $5.00 counts, and we really need it to save this poor dog.  He is currently in the Houston shelter.  We have put a hold on him for rescue but we urgently need to raise money to pay for the medical care that he so desperately needs.  It would break our hearts to turn this dog away because we couldn’t pay for his medical care.  There is no telling what has happened to this dog.  My best guess would be that he was in the hands of dogfighters and used as a bait dog or fighting dog.  Look at his picture and tell me that this doesn’t make you sick.  Please find it in your heart to donate towards his care.

He will be in ABR’s care tomorrow.

Hi, I’m Cisco! I’m currently living with my family (in MD), but my daddy works 12 hour days and just doesn’t have time for me anymore. I spend more of the day crated. This is no life for a great guy like me! I’m very friendly and affectionate! I’m hyper and strong, but I just started obedience training. I’m super smart and eager to learn, so I’m sure I’ll graduate at the top of my class! Since I’m kind of a wild guy right now, it would be better if I didn’t live with any small kids. I might accidentally knock them over, and I wouldn’t want to do that! So, if you’re in the market for a sweet and fun guy, please give me a shot! If you would like to meet Cisco, please call Kim at 443-386-6170 and fill out the ABR application.

Fugee- Urgent!!!!

This is an urgent courtesy posting!!! This sweet boy has been in a shelter for a month, and is running out of time!! Fugee is a one year old male American Bulldog. He weighs about 75 pounds. He was turned in because his owner felt that he was getting too big for his apartment. He is a very happy boy!! Fugee is good with cats, kids, and other dogs!

Fugee is currently in MD. If you are interested in adopting him, please complete an ABR adoption application or call Kim at 443-386-6170 or Jessie at 410-627-8085.

Roscoe- Urgent!!!!

This is an urgent courtesy posting!!! This sweet boy has been in a shelter for over a month, and is out of time!! This sweet face needs to be saved! Roscoe is an adult male American Bulldog. He is confident, house trained, and knows some commands! He also loves to go for car rides and is eager to please his humans. Roscoe would do well as an only dog, or with a female companion. He is a little too interested in cats to live with one. He would also do well with older children. Roscoe is a shelter staff favorite, and they are doing their best to place him before his time is up!

Roscoe is currently in MD. If you are interested in adopting him, please complete an ABR adoption application or call Kim at 443-386-6170 or Jessie at 410-627-8085.
