DON’T OWN AN AMERICAN BULLDOG IF YOU ARE ATTRACTED TO THE BREED “CHIEFLY” BECAUSE OF IT’S REPUTATION AS A PROTECTIVE DOG
While an American Bulldog is a large, impressive breed, true protection is only obtained through a lifetime of training. Even if you do not choose to train in protection, an AB requires many hours of obedience in training and socialization. The dogs of the “dominant” breeds can be expected at some point in their lives to challenge their owners. The American Bulldog is no different. This makes obedience training absolutely essential. Some AB’s have been found to be slow to bark, coming into their voice at two to three years of age. Owner’s shouldn’t immediately expect their bulldog puppy to instinctively warn them of an approaching stranger. There are many other breeds whose “watch dog” capabilities far exceed that of an AB. If you are primarily seeking a dog that will bark at strangers when they approach your home, you may want to look into the Chihuahua who barks and bites when a leaf blows or particular terrier breeds.
