Rescue Recap- w/e 11/14/10

Posted: November 14th, 2010

Hi everyone and Happy Sunday!

Oh my….. after pooring (pun intended) over the mounting list of bills, the what seems like a gazillion emails of dogs needing help, the growing list of ‘still waiting’ dogs, the shrinking list of ‘adopted’ dogs, this thought comes to mind:

We’re gonna need a bigger boat!

From Urban Dictionary:

“Phrase originally used by well known actor Roy Scheider in the 1975 blockbuster ‘Jaws’. He utters the line when he gets a good look at the size of the shark that is circling the small fishing boat he is on. Used in day to day life when a situation seems insurmountable.”

We need foster homes!!!! We are desperate. There simply isn’t anywhere to put any more dogs and we just cannot afford more boarding bills. If you are able, please consider opening your heart and home so that these babies might have a chance. You can volunteer to foster by completing our volunteer application (link at the top).

Again, we want to thank everyone, for responding to our pleas for donations. We received $693 this week. We’ve added the names of those that contributed this week to our ‘We Need Help‘ page. Every little bit helps and we surely appreciate it!!!!!

Several of the donations we received this week were through our Facebook Causes site. Thank you so VERY much! We would also like to thank Carolyn Bohnert, Debby Jane, and Lisa Curtis Brown for their birthday wishes to help support American Bulldog Rescue.

We’d like to also thank Adrienne Mack for the donating the proceeds from the beautiful Bulldog/Flag painting that she did and Debby Jane (our FB extraordinaire who simply ‘had to have it’) for purchasing it 🙂

We have several people that have written to us who want to help with fundraising by donating a % of their commissions on the sale of products. (thank you!!!!) We’re working on a web page and also a website to try to pull together all of the ways to help so it’s all in one place. In the meanwhile, please take a look at Mick’s Etsy Store. He and Trish are owned by Stinky 1 (now Finn). He builds beautiful dog bowl stands and dog beds and donates the proceeds of the sale to ABR.

You can also help to support ABR by visiting our ABR Market America site where you can get cash back with purchases.

Okay, I’ve rambled on enough. On to the dogs…… (though there’s a couple of more updates to do)

Have a great week everyone!

Still waiting:

Jayden came to our rescue and was saved from being crated too long every day. She is a friendly, playful girl who just wants to hang out with her “people.” She is looking for a home with structure, consistency and love. Jayden knows Sit, Stay, Off, Wait, Come, Crate and Time for Bed. Foster mom is working on Down. Jayden loves to eat and is currently about 50 pounds. She is not overly rough and with close supervision has been very calm with children in the foster mom’s neighborhood and likes to play with different toys, loves belly rubs and is content to lay at your feet while you read or work on the computer. She enjoys her walks and is almost puppy-like in her curiosity about leaves blowing across the street or watching a bird hop through the yard. Jayden is completely housebroken. She gets along well with dogs her size or larger. Her favorite things are likes banana slices and baby carrots as snacks. Jayden is currently in PA.

Chully Pepper has been spayed and vaccinated and is ready for her forever family.  Thank you Aunt Louise for taking such good care of her.  Per Louise, ‘she is the funniest, fastest and smartest puppy’.   She loves to crawl under the fence to play with the 65 lb. Hound Dog that Louise owns.  She is fast as lightening and just chases him all over the place.  It’s hysterical to watch this little 9 lb. baby chasing the big beast everywhere. When she’s not chasing the Hound, she loves to snuggle in your hair and nibble on your ears.  She is currently in FL.

Bullet is a quiet, gentle one year old who is looking for a family where he can enjoy a low level of activity while he recovers from heartworm treatment.. Bullet is great in the car and good on a leash. He loves to give kisses and have his ears rubbed! His tail is always wagging! Bullet is currently in MD.

Bullet’s photo album

Twinkle, Chully Pepper’s mom, is our little star.  She owes her life to a caring staff member that just couldn’t see this sweet girl and her baby go to Heaven.  Thank you so much for hiding her and thank you to everyone that scrambled to find an emergency foster (Sue) and immediate transport from one end of Florida to the other to safety. Twinkle has proven to be the sweetest little girl and just loves to lounge around on the couch and crawl into bed with you at night to snuggle.  She was spayed on Wednesday and ready for her forever home.  The vet believes she’s approximately 1 year old. She is currently in FL.

10/29/10 update: She is just a LOVER!! She loves to hop up onto your lap and give LOTS of kisses!! Definitely house trained. NO accidents in the house! She loves to run and play outside. Twinkles is still working on some basic commands like sit but is crate trained and even goes in there all by herself. She’s a GREAT dog! Ready to go to her furever home!!

It’s me Darla! Here’s what my foster mom wrote about me:
This is an awesome firecracker of a little girl. Muscle bound and truly beautiful she just LOVES life and all it has to offer. 110% house broken and crate trained.  You just couldn’t ask for a better dog! She is one of the happiest and most loving fosters I have ever had.  She loves to cuddle and will literally dive into your arms making you crack up. We don’t know much about Darla’s past besides she was an obvious breeder used to excess then tossed aside when they where done with her. But she truly is a blessing to be had.  She is smart as a whip and has learned some wicked tricks like how to open doors and if sitting doesn’t get me a cookie, I will hug your waist looking up at you with big sweet eyes until you give in.  And if you look at me long enough (because I’m really quiet while I’m in my kennel) I sing.  You will laugh (music to my ears) and let me out for cuddles!!! All I can say is whoever is smart enough to adopt this baby is going to be one lucky son of a gun with years of laughter and love to fill their home!I wouldn’t really recommend cats (it is doable but slightly annoying) or kids under 5 (as she will happily knock them down and kiss them way too much lol. Darla is in FL.

Mr. Magoo, aka MaGOOF, is a very silly boy.  He is still very puppyish in the way he watches things.  He chases leaves in the street and shadows of birds flying overhead.  He loves to chase the reflection of his tags on the floor.  He loves to go for walks and prances down the street like he is “the bees knees”.  He is doing very well with house training, only plays with his toys and is learning his basic commands through hand signals.  Since Magoo is deaf, he will only go to a home with a fenced in yard.  Magoo will also require twice daily eye drops which cost roughly $5.  When he sees the bottle for his eye drops, he sits and lets you put them in. Magoo is in PA.

Magoo’s web page and photo album

ps- My foster mom calls ME goofy, she should talk! Check out her Magoodilocks tale. I also have my very own photo album over at Animal Rescue Flights. There’s some really cool photos of me and my pilots. I know, I know…. nobody likes the muzzle part but I made everybody late (2 hours on the 2nd leg of my trip because I chewed through my harness and the pilot had to go to the pet store to get me another one!). I didn’t really mind it, it wasn’t for long. What an awesome trip that was.

It’s me, Lydia! Thanks to some generous donors, I started the long road to recovery, and boy do I mean LONG! I had the itchy scratchies big time so I ended up spending a lot of time at Dr. D’s office. My volunteer says I’ve been one expensive girl, but I’m completely worth it! Now that I’ve got my hair back, they determined I was ready to go under the knife, Beverly Hills style! I haven’t been able to see more than a squint for quite awhile, but now! I can see everything, including when they’re on their way to put my eye meds in! Did you know when you lean forward, a cone makes a perfect seal against the ground and keeps them from touching your eyes? I mastered that quick…I’ll be applying for the doggy Mensa group shortly…I can’t wait to move on to a new home but until then…rent ain’t cheap! Please send in a donation! I’m currently in FL.

It’s me, Roscoe! I was listed as an urgent courtesy post because my time was up at the shelter. Whew, that was close. I’m at a foster home now in MD. Here’s what my foster mom wrote about me:

He is sooooooooooo sweet! He was great on the long car ride and has enjoyed many walks around my property on his leash. He sits, gives you his paw, and will lay down on command! What a good boy!

Roscoe’s photo album!

Are you looking for some fun in your life ? Well have we got the guy for you ! This is Angus. He is an almost 2 year old pittie boy who is full of good times. He is a big beautiful boy…weighing in at approximately 80 pounds. He is GREAT with every person that he meets even kids. However, he will not be placed with any very young children because he doesn’t know his own strength and may knock them over! Angus gets along with some medium to large size dogs but he doesn’t seem to like small dogs and he definitely doesn’t like kitty cats. We are looking for an experienced bully breed home where Angus can be an only dog so he can be the “King of the Castle ” and hog up all the attention . Angus knows most of his basic commands….sit, down, stay…and he is fully crate and house trained. Angus is currently in PA. View his photo album.

Mojo here and I’m doing awesome with my foster family.  I get along great with the old grumpy fat cat and my sister Pumkin Head.  My foster mommy just loves me and tells me how good I’m doing.  For a little puppy that had a really crummy life….I hit the jack pot with ABR and my wonderful foster family.  I like the picture with my halo on as I’m such an ANGEL but mommy had to put the Devil costume on me too.  I’m glad SHE thinks it’s funny.  Ha ha ha mommy. I’m living in Louisiana now

ps- Down here in our local New Orleans culture, it is believed that those born with two different color eyes are imparted with the spirit of wisdom and love. That’s why I’m called Mojo!

Dear sweet June Bug just doesn’t have anyone…..she’s such a sweet and loving dog that’s never known any life other than as a puppy mill breeding machine.  We would love to find her a wonderful family to put a smile on that mug.  She so deserves to know what love is and to enjoy life as a family dog vs. living in a crate all her life. June Bug has lived with cats and children in a temporary foster home but unfortunately, she may have to go back to boarding as it was only a temporary home…. June Bug is located in Virginia

UPDATE- It’s me June Bug! Wow, oh wow….. I’ve had a busy couple of days. I got to fly in my own personal chariot (check it out at the bottom of the page) to Virginia to my new foster home.

Hello, my name is Layla! I’m currently in MD. Here is a little more about me:

Layla is 2.5 years old, very well behaved, housebroken, knows sit, stay, come and lie down. She was taken to an animal shelter in Delaware when her family could no longer care for her. A volunteer at the shelter was so charmed by Layla that she drove several hundred miles to get her to our rescue. Layla did well on her temperament tests. She would prefer to be the only dog in the family and ignored the cats at the vet hospital.

Goliath is a good boy who just had bad luck. He came from GA and if he had a family, they just didn’t take care of him. Skinny and Heartworm positive, he is now getting the care he needs. Goliath is good with other dogs and great in the car. He is loved by everyone who meets him because his southern charm shines. He could really use a family who will appreciate his charming personality.  He is in the beginning stages of his heartworm treatment and could use a foster family to help him through it. He is currently in PA.

Hello friends! It’s me Sumo. You’re probably thinking I was named after a sumo wrestler, but I’m really just an exceptionally good natured, low key and easy going guy. I really like going for walks and riding in the car, but I LOVE people and getting loved on! I make new friends wherever I go. I also like experiencing new things. See, I spent the first part of my life tied to my doghouse in the mountains of Virginia. Now I’m loving freedom and ready to go home with you so you can keep fueling my curiosity for learning and seeing new things! I’m crate trained and I rarely bark, but I would prefer a house where I can be the only dog so I can hog all of the attention (hey, I’ve got a lot of making up to do!)

Sumo has been in a foster home for what seems like forever. Won’t you please consider opening your heart and home to this beautiful boy? He is currently in MD. Sumo’s Photo Album

I’m such a nice guy! My skin is not as itchy and I’m actually starting to grow some hair. I hear it’s going to take a lot more time but they feed me lots of good stuff, I get a lot of baths and get stuck with needles twice a week to build my immune system. I really want everyone to love me. Yesterday I was outback with Jodi, she was doing something and 3 little chicks came up to see me. Maybe I was tired from my neuter but I really didn’t even care about those 3 little chicks. All I really care about is people looking at me and telling me I am doing better. I want to be touched by people all the time, it feels so so good. No one ever touched me before when my skin was real yucky.
Love,
Marlon

pa- I’m in PA. That’s a new photo of me. I’m looking really pretty aren’t I?

Hi! My name is Kate. I know we just met, but I can already tell that I’m going to like you! I greet everyone with hugs, so please crouch down so I can nuzzle up beside you for a nice warm bulldog snuggle. If I really like you, I’ll even give you my paw!  I also know how to sit and really like to go for rides in the car. The rescue people say that I’m really calm and gentle and that I’m good with kids. I really just love being around people! I also think I’m patient because I had a litter of 11 puppies!  They have all been adopted, so now I’m looking for a nice family to settle in with so I can give them all of my love. I’m currently with a foster family in PA.

Hello there, my name is Pinkie! I’m currently in PA. Here’s what my foster mom just wrote about me-

Pinkie is such a joy to be around!!  We call her sneaky Pinky because she is so quiet- We don’t even know she is in the room until we turn around and see her big pretty eyes starring at us.  Her fur is really coming in now, she looks so good!  She loves her foster brother and playing/cuddling/bathing him.  She has such a nurturing spirit.  She likes to sit where ever you are and she sleeps in her crate.  She will wait patiently for us to wake up before letting her out.  She does not chew on anything that is not hers. She listens very well and will make an exceptional pet for someone!!!

Hey everyone! It’s Merle checking in. I’m doing really good. I’m still working on my heartworm treatment but things are going pretty good for me.  My foster mom Tracey loves me really loves me and she tells everyone all day long! She writes people notes about “whoever adopts him is really lucky” Also, my foster sister Loopie is really patient with me, she waits for me and shows me around…she is like my seeing eye dog! I’m still looking for my furever home! I’m in PA.

Hello, my name is Cannoli.OK, I’m not Italian, but you must admit that I’m as cute as the yummy Italian dessert. I just arrived from Georgia, where I was struggling just to make ends meet. I know it’s hard to look at my “before” pics, but, trust me, I’ve put on some pounds since these were taken. I’m just a year old and really, really sweet and gentle. I have heartworms and am being treated now. I’m looking for a nice, quiet home where I can relax for a few months until I’m back to my old self. I’m currently in MD.

Hello to everyone!  My name is Alphonso,I am a French Bulldog / Boston Terrier mix and I arrived in PA via animal rescue flights! Thank you Jack the pilot. I was a stray in South Carolina, and ABR rescued me. I am approximately two to three years old, but life has been very difficult for my short life thus far. The vet told Jodi that I have stage 2 Heartworm with an enlarged heart, Erlichia (a tickborne disease), high blood pressure, and blood and protein in my urine. On a brighter note my foster parents say how loving and adorable I am. I get along with the other dogs in the house, and they seem to like me too! Life is great now that I am being cared for. Unfortunately it is VERY EXPENSIVE to have me get 100% well. Please won’t you help. I would be eternally grateful! Every dollar counts! Thank you, Alphonso

ps- Be sure to check out my photo album! They added some new pictures of me hanging out with my foster brother, Finn (formerly known as Stinky 1)

Meet Dozer! …….. also known as Halloweenie- He is 10 months old and absolutely adorable! Look at those eyes! Dozer was kept outside his whole life, and is very shy. He loves human interaction and just wants to be part of the family! Who wouldn’t want to cuddle with this sweet boy? Dozer is currently in MD.

Camden is a gentle, loving one year old who came to us from a high kill shelter in Georgia. He LOVES to give hugs and kisses! He is very good in the car and does well on a leash. He gets excited to go on walks and explore! Camden is in MD.

Sisterhood! Ya Ya!
We are Jemma, Chloe and Bella and we are sisters! Our mom had an ‘accident’ …….and then there were 11 of us. As much as it really upset our big family, our humans just couldn’t keep up with us…how did we know we weren’t allowed to eat the sofa? Our foster families have alot more time to teach us what they call ‘house manners’ and we are kinda getting it, but don’t be fooled, we are pretty spunky! Our ideal home (and our foster fams promised us this) would be American Bulldog Lovers and not just families looking for a puppy. We will not be pups for long and when we  grow up we are gonna be big girls. We are pretty “bully” and don’t really have the experience to run your home but we would really try it if you are wimpy! We would hate to be alone all day so please do not apply for us thinking that we will be happy in a crate alone all day. Sister Bella who is mostly white doesn’t exactly hear everything so she really needs to go to a home with a male dog who can  help to alert her to lots of things going on around her. One more thing, um we bite…all pups do, so PLEASE no small children with plump scratchable skin…moms will not like it. We’re in PA!

Hello, my name is Dora. I’m just a baby…. 9 weeks old. I’m a happy, healthy little girl and I’m currently living in a foster home in MD with my sister, Scout.
And my name is Scout! They’re working on getting the bigger picture of me so you can see how cute I am too! I’m hanging out in MD with my sister, Dora.

My name is Sugar! My babies and I are currently heading to PA today. Here’s what one of my foster moms wrote about me-

Sugar is just the sweetest, most easy-going dogs I have come across in rescue/foster. She LOVES to go riding in a car.  In fact, if you just head toward your vehicle, she will run that direction, too, and wait for you to open the door so she can jump in.  No car sickness, either.  She is very polite, and is food motivated.  Katie said that Sugar is learning commands (sit) and will offer a paw to for you to kiss, er, shake. While Katie is out of town, Sugar is staying put with her new dog friends and the petsitter, while the puppies have come to my house for looking-after.  We thought this would be best; it gives Sugar about a week to continue to dry up her milk.  Katie has done a fabulous job of getting Sugar back to looking the way a dog should look, and not like the skeleton that she was.  The puppies are looking great, too, growing like weeds and getting pudgy.  Even the little runt female looks good!  She will be a small dog, unlike her siblings that got the “big” genes.

Sugar & Pups photo album

My name is Frankie! Forget Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella Schminderella, Snow White has nothin on me…I am the new damsel in distress success story! See, I was down south making puppies and getting bit by mosquitoes (chained to a tree by the way), I was in pretty rough shape. But I have been saved. I am starting over. Got my heartworm treatment and feeling good! I am a a real head turner but forget that, I am funny! I high 5! I make sexy faces as you can see in my photos, I know some other tricks and I know how to make people smile. I’m 2 years old and am on my way to Princessdom! I’m in PA.

Olive w/ foster brother Lucas

{flv}olive102710|200|200{/flv}

One of the staff members at Miami Animal Control called us with a special request to take a 2-3 month old baby bulldog. The catch (and there is always one!)… She was brought in by an AC officer the night before, with her eye hanging out! Upon veterinary evaluation, it was determined the eye had been out of the socket for at least a full week. When an eye is removed from the socket, it loses both blood flow and the lubrication that tears provide. Poor little girl’s eye was necrotic (dead tissue), very infected, and unable to be saved. We hate to think of how scary and painful this was for such a small baby, but she seems to be handling it like a trooper! Her saviors at the shelter gave her her own blankie and a little teddy bear that she loves! She carries it around with her and sleeps on top of it. It’ll take some time for her to learn how to navigate with just one eye (she bumps into things now and needs some help) but in no time she will be perfect! Please send your well wishes to Olive (one of the staff at the vet hospital suggested rather than naming her popeye- since she’s a girl- to name her after popeye’s girlfriend- olive oil!) We know our fans make such a huge difference in all of our success stories- both with their encouragement and donations! Olive is now in a wonderful foster home in Tampa where she’s being totally spoiled and babied.  She’s doing great with her potties and playing with her big brother.  She is growing so fast and will make a wonderful puppy for the lucky family that adopts her.

Wonderful with all creatures great and small, Rosebud is in a foster home with a little fluffy Terrier puppy who bosses her around and gets on her nerves but all she does is try to teach him manners in a motherly way. A true test in patience!  She is housetrained, good on a leash and a great companion for a car ride. Our vet guesses her to be between 2-3 years old. He also told us that she had a pretty rough life! Here’s what the shelter wrote about her:

Rosebud may not look so great now, but she is going to be a beauty! She was rescued from an owner who was keeping her chained to a tree with very little food and water and breeding her litter-after-litter. Luckily, a Good Samaritan noticed Rosebud’s suffering and contacted animal control. Rosebud’s owner wasn’t willing to comply with the animal ordinance, so he surrendered Rosebud to the county shelter.

We love Rosebud!  And we have promised her that it is all just a memory that is fading fast! She is in PA.

New Arrivals:

Hi! My name is Jackson and I am a sweet boy from the Deep South! I can’t hear you but that does not stop me from giving out the hugs and kisses. I am getting used to the simple things in life like a warm bed, regular food, and people who care about me and boy is life good!  I love going on walks and do very good on a leash. I am the favorite at the bus stop in the mornings (all the kids love me and I love them) and like saying hi to all the dogs in the ‘hood. I am housebroken, quiet and when my foster leaves I curl up in a little ball until someone comes home to wake me. I am still not sure about things like doorways and ceilings (I spent a lot of time on my own outside) but I am such a good sport about them.  I love to be snuggled and will happily give out a kiss to whoever wants one.  Check out my pics! I’m in MD.

Mugsy is a sweet girl who has been running stray for over a year.  Her only companions have been a stray beagle and an 82 year-old widow who has been putting food out for both dogs. Mugsy is very timid and fearful of people and no one could ever get close enough to catch her.  A “neighbor” was going to shoot Mugsy.  With the efforts of five people and after a couple hours of work, Mugsy let her guard down just long enough for someone to get a slip a lead over her head.  She was terrified and shaking like a leaf.  Mugsy was then relocated to her foster home. Two days later, a vet came out to examine and vaccinate Mugsy.  The vet determined she was no more than two years old and she weighs 73lbs. She has been spayed and she tested positive for heartworms.  We began heartworm treatment on 10/27.  She will spend the next 4-6 weeks in recovery.  Mugsy is very shy and everyone agrees she must have been abused.  She is not a hyper dog.  She does not jump or bark.  She is afraid of strangers, especially men.  She cowers if you approach her while holding objects in your hands. She has never displayed any aggression toward us,our dogs or our cat. When you look into her eyes you can just tell she wants to be loved.  Mugsy needs an experienced dog home where she can learn what being a spoiled dog is all about. She is in Madison, TN. If you would like to adopt Mugsy, please complete an ABR application.

Bentley is a big, healthy boy (130 pounds) but acts like a baby and has a really sweet and goofy personality – everyone that meets him adores him. His favorite activities include going outside for walks, riding in the car, looking out the windows and front door, and tugging on a rope or other toy. He is a people-lover and lives with 2 cats. They get along fabulously and even cuddle up together sometimes. Bentley is housebroken and is used to staying alone at home for a 10 hour stretch each day during the week (NOT in a crate). He is very obedient and knows commands such as sit, lay down, wait, no, come (sometimes has trouble with “stay” because he just hates to not follow you around!)… gives his paw when you ask and knows the words “hungry”, “food”, “walk”, “ride”. Bentley knows his toys by name and will bring a specific toy if you ask for it. He is not destructive. He does carry shoes to his bed and sleeps with them when he’s feeling lonely. He’s pretty quiet – mostly barks only when someone knocks or rings the doorbell. Bentley was born in Russia and spent his early years in Eastern Europe. His papers are in Russian and he has his own passport! If you would like to meet Bentley, please call Kim at 443-386-6170 and fill out the ABR application.
Hi, I’m Cisco! I’m currently living with my family (in MD), but my daddy works 12 hour days and just doesn’t have time for me anymore. I spend more of the day crated. This is no life for a great guy like me! I’m very friendly and affectionate! I’m hyper and strong, but I just started obedience training. I’m super smart and eager to learn, so I’m sure I’ll graduate at the top of my class! Since I’m kind of a wild guy right now, it would be better if I didn’t live with any small kids. I might accidentally knock them over, and I wouldn’t want to do that! So, if you’re in the market for a sweet and fun guy, please give me a shot! If you would like to meet Cisco, please call Kim at 443-386-6170 and fill out the ABR application.

 Ruby the turtle….. almost

Carey writes: My brother and his kids LOVE to come over and dress up (like they’re Yorkies) and humiliate my dogs.  Lucky for Deacon, it was Ruby’s turn.  They just showed up with a turtle costume.  For some reason they thought the ‘Boxer’ size would fit Porky here.
